How to Watch BBC iPlayer Outside the UK- Watch in Canada &US !

how to get US Netflix in Canada

BBC will be shutting down its Global iPlayer by June 26th, 2015.
This means ex-pats and others living outside the UK who have been able to watch BBC iplayer will no longer have access.
If you want to watch BBC iPlayer outside UK you will need to use a service that blocks the IP address of your computer. The good news is- this takes under 15 minutes to do.

What does this mean and is legal?

Your IP address is like the postal code for your computer, laptop or device. When you are on the internet your location is automatically detected by the website you are visiting. This is for all sites– all the time. This is why you get re-directed to a Canadian site if you try and go on to Sony Germany for example- or why you might see a warning like “This video not available in your Country” when you try to watch a video clip on a US site,

Why Can’t I just watch it from where I live? Why bother blocking me?

Its is expensive to host and stream video and some companies do not want to spend money to service countries that cannot purchase from them or benefit their advertisers. Why advertise to someone who cannot use your services?

Some countries like to control the content in their Country. Canada, for example, has rules about how much Canadian content needs to be on the radio or television.

Many people use a VPN ( Virtual Private Network) that changes the DNS settings on their internet connection.
By changing these settings ( easily found in your wireless router setup) the Internet is “tricked” into thinking you are somewhere else. This is how you can get US Netflix in Canada, UK Netflix in the US or Hulu Plus in Canada when you normally couldn’t.

How to watch BBC iPlayer from Outside the UK- Watch BBC iPlayer in Canada & USA

1) Have internet connection and device to watch.
2) Set up VPN
3) Watch iPLayer from browser here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

1) You can watch on ipad, android tablet, Smart TV, laptop, PC, X-Box Live, PS#, PS4, etc.

2) Set up your VPN – I suggest UnBlock-US
They have a free trial for 7 days and no need to give them a credit card or pay anything to try. This is good if you are unsure if the service is for you or just trying on a whim :-)
UnBlock-US also has a .99 cent promo. Normally it is 4.99 a and month it is only .99 cents right now. I also like because it is a reputable  Canadian company.

Unblock-us.com is reputable and you do get that free 7 day trial if you are nervous.

You are going to have to make changes to your DNS settings on router- they have excellent instructions on the site. It looks a bit scary at first but I promise it is fairly easy.

Setting up the US VPN/ proxy server takes about 5- 10 minutes.
Here are detailed instruction for many router brands and how to change router DNS settings- don’t be intimidated!
Set Up Your Wireless Router Instructions.
Instructions for router brands like linksys, motorola, TP-Link, etc. are on site and even brands not listed still easy-ish. It is just a matter of copying and pasting 2 -3 sets of numbers into the setup of your wireless rrouter..
If your brand not listed- don’t worry- it’s not that hard and you will be able to do with not much effort.

Once you are set up – you are good to go!

The devices connected to your wireless router will now be able to gop on the internet and have the freedom to watch Us Netflix, Hulu PLus and BBC iPlayer!
